Willard Brothers Make Some Noise
At The Wilderness
By Rupert X Pellett
Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series - Round 21
Wild Wilderness Raceway
LOGAN, OH Sep 2
This off-site round of the Ohio
County Fairs Motocross Championship Series traveled to the rolling
hills just outside of Logan, Ohio, as
the crisp fall-like eve turned in to a warm, sunny day for district
eleven motocross. The Willard brothers, of Thornville, Ohio, took
advantage of the beautiful race
conditions to run amok over this hilly and twisty circuit - both
notching two wins on to their
impressive resumes. Younger brother Michael, recently returning
with a great performance at
Loretta Lynn's amateur National championships, strode out a new
RM-125 from his sponsor,
F&S Suzuki, to compete for the first time on a quarter-liter
bike. The machine was obviously
to his liking - as he mastered the Schoolboy class - leaving
second place for another
F&S pilot - Derrick Arledge. Michael was more dominant though
in the 85cc (12-15) group -
where he gave a lesson in high-speed racing, twisting the throttle
hard on the many off- camber
turns this facility offers and running away from the pack with
ease. Older brother Andy "Andy-Man"
Willard was not to be touched by the competition here at Wild
Wilderness - he stomped on the
125 and 250 B classes - whipping his RM-125 and 250 Suzukis in
with big leads. A couple of
Kyles were steaming in the mini classes here - Kyle Smith of
Fairborn smoked the Mini-Junior
class, whilst Kyle Burlile took the measure of the 65cc
contenders. The money classes
would see Jasons taking the cash, Kenna, West-Virginia's Jason
Saunders taught the 125 A class
a thing or two and it was "Racin" Jason Wade of
Springfield, Ohio, posting
another win aboard his Competition Accessories YZ-250 in the 250 A
division. Worth noting - the
extremely speedy rides of David Herb, from nearby Rockbridge, he
would finish a very credible second
place overall in both 125 and 250 A - in a well- stacked
field. Very fast and nationally
ranked Cobra pilots Egan Rosell and Walker Brightwell tore up two
of the 50cc classes - Rosell took the
first place trophy in the younger 4-6 age division, whereas
Brightwell earned victory in the 7-8
age class. Circleville's J.T. Turner won the other 50cc class,
the oil-injected and Yamaha PW-50
dominated races were the possession of Turner, with Shawn Thompson,
of McArthur , a close second. The Open class victory was once
again credited to Chris
"Led-Man" Ledbeater Jr., he thundered home first aboard
his mighty YZ-426, leaving the
second spot to Buckeye Lake's Jim Miller - also 426 mounted. The
older age classes would witness
some huffing and puffing, as the elder riders gasped for air
around this grueling circuit.
"King" Richard Robinson was having no problem though,
besting the field of 40 plus
riders . Mark Roop out-thumped Chad "Ice" Walker and his
KTM 520, Roop rode away from
Walker to take the 25 plus class, though Walker would have his day
in the 30 plus group - notching yet
another win aboard his orange and black machine.
