SUPER STRUNK STRUTS HIS STUFF - MARION CLOSES THE DOORS
By Rupert X Pellett
Ohio Arenacross Series - Rounds 17/18/19
Marion Indoor Coliseum
MARION, OH FEB 15/16/17

Closing up shop in Marion after this weekend of indoor motocross, the county fair coliseum shuts down until the American Motosports crew brings the Ohio Arenacross series back again next year. At the final event of the year - C. "Brad" Strunk paid homage to the building by thrashing his yellow machines in for many podium appearances - logging in a teary farewell to his wintertime job as a pro motocross racer and looking forward to district eleven's upcoming outdoor season.

Between Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon's racing - Brad Strunk had one terrific weekend getaway - the National Arenacross series regular took time out to compete in his home state for a change - albeit a little north of his hometown of Hamilton - a Cincinnati suburb. Strunk, racing aboard his Cycle Specialties backed Suzukis - took three pro class main event wins on the weekend, two second - place podium spots and a hard luck fifth place finish - snatching a majority of the AMS promoter's large purse. Worth mentioning as well - Strunk would go on to capture the cash in all three 25 plus 'A' class contests, as well. Running right behind Strunk all weekend in the quarter century old club, was Newark's Dickie Hoy.

Hoy, of the Buckeye Powersports team - catapulted his Aaron Madinger tuned CRF-450 in for a few nice holeshots over the three day event - but was unable to get the pro class finishes he desired. Brothers fighting all weekend for the podium included the Kuchler brothers of Westerville on their BWR suspension/ Timmy K tuned Hondas and the Whitcraft brothers of Pickerington - aboard their Ronnie Rehmert built F&S RM Suzukis. While this Ohio based series has seen a number of out of state competitors - this weekend would see a couple Michigan Wolverines come down to put the smack down on the Buckeye boys - as Muskegon, Michigan's Randall Woodring captured Sunday's 250 pro main, while Saturday night's 250 pro main would fall victim to the amazing talents of Thomas Barron and his Yamaha. Barron, of Howell, Michigan, proved that the locals can be bested on their home track - as he twisted the throttle hard all night - posting a fourth in the 125 pro main, besides his 250 feature victory.

Logan's Cody Gang had another great weekend, ripping off three main event wins in the 65cc class and racking up two 85cc 7-11 age class victories over the course of the three-day extravaganza. F&S Suzuki mini-star Zach Ames ran hard, as usual - notching two 85cc class victories on his new Suzuki RM-85.

Chillicothe's Nathan Skaggs is extremely difficult to beat in Marion - he lost just one race out of a total nine motos over the three days - posting crushing podium top-spots in 125 and 250 B and the 16-24 age division, as well. The 50cc 7-8 age group would see two fast young men scoring the wins all weekend long, Larue, Ohio's KTM mounted Austin Primavera and Delaware's Mitch Dowell went home with a bunch of trophies from this AMS Ohio Arenacross series event. The novice racers had their own little war to wage- as the 125 'C' class - split into two groups - would see Mansfield's Aaron Harvey and his Honda up front consistently, as well as Dover's Dave Watson and his Yamaha. Harvey was doing all the damage in the 250 'C' class, taking the beginners to school whilst screaming around this jump-filled coliseum. Emily Titus, Ethan Scarberry and Matthew Blum were the shaft-drive experts, as they silently swooshed their blue steeds to many wins on their 50cc Yamahas in the 4-8 age group division.
