Bennett Keeps On Ticking – At Hilliard Fair
By Rupert X Pellett
Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series – Round 8
Franklin County Fairgrounds Motocross Track
Hilliard, OH
JULY 14
At way past forty years old,
“Gentleman” Gerry Bennett, a longtime fixture in Ohio motocross
racing, opted to come out of retirement and bang some bars with
the locals on a balmy July eve at this fair race - just outside
Columbus, Ohio. Surprising many, not only would Bennett be
comfortable in the thick of things in the 40+ division, he was
actually able to win the one-moto format race after tangling
with the fast Kenny Thomas all moto long. In fact, strangely
enough, Thomas was able to get around Bennett
and take the lead near the end of the moto, yet with all the
confusion of lappers in this seventeen – rider race, Thomas
pulled off with the white flag and Bennett was able to march on
for the win. Bennett, after tucking away his trophy for the
evening, was ready to head back to his regular weekend duties,
where he competes in the AMA’s National
Hillclimb Championships – currently
in the top – ten ! Thomas, an excavation engineer by day, did
some excavating of his own in the 30 plus class though, taking
the win over Bennett for the old-man’s payday class – aboard his
Thomas excavating backed CRF-250.
