Cunningham Cool and Collected At Hilliard Fair
By Rupert X Pellett
Ohio County Fairs Motocross Championship Series - Round 7
Franklin County Fair
Hilliard, OH
Jul 16

Saturday night at the Franklin County Fair was all good for Tommy Cunningham, as the local rider and his Yamaha Of Columbus sponsored YZ-250 was on top of the track and the podium, here in Hilliard. It was already moist and muggy around Columbus, but when storms came through and drenched the area just hours before showtime, promoter Matt Eastman and his merry crew went to work on the mucky track, attempting to prepare it for some good racing in the evening. Although much was scraped off the track and a groovy circuit - with some slippery sections, became available - halfway through the race program a steady drizzle slicked up the already sketchy track, making things very tricky for most of the rest of the evening. Great racing was taking place though, as fast amateurs like Cunningham were swarming around the slick circuit. Cunningham, using quick starts and some incredible style through the wet and slippery whoop section - was able to run through and snag two class wins, besting Joey Pellett and his Kawasaki in the 16-24 class and slithering off with the 250 B class after leaving Lonnie Maxson and Zach Klamfoth to battle over second. Ted Rogers Jr. was on top of his game, screaming around the course - located just feet from a raucous fair-midway - and snatching two wins from the overflow crowd of competitors. Rogers took his Suzukis to wins in the Schoolboy and 85cc (12-15) category. Mark Roop was once again battling in the vet classes, handily taking the 30 plus race and coming close in 25 plus, as he battled  250 pro winner Tony Robinson for the  win. Robinson would come out ahead, after making a sneaky and excellent pass near the turnaround's muddy water-hole.
