Katin
& Metcalf Chew Up The Columbus Expo
By Rupert X Pellett
American Motosports Ohio Arenacross Championships
Rounds 4, 5, 6
Ohio State Fair Expo Center
Columbus, OH
Dec 5/6/7
While
the big show came to town and tore up the Ohio Expo Center, it was
Ohio's Mike Katin and
Kentucky's Arenacross - regular Nick Metcalf stashing their
pockets full of prize money,
as a swarm of the Midwest's best riders went at it inside this
bullring battlegrounds of
moto-mayhem, just a stone's throw from downtown Columbus. Over the
three days of racing, Katin and
Metcalf were the most dominant of the healthy turnout of pro
riders, as they each took wins on Friday night and Sunday
afternoon - Metcalf handling
the 125 class both days, while Katin was on top of things in the
250 pro races. This American
- Motosports promoted, twelve - round series kicked off in
Jackson, Ohio and with stops
again in Jackson and, later, upstate in Marion, this festive,
rolling moto-spectacular
draws racers, spectators and a fun loving track crew to events
throughout the state. Splitting the
weekend wins of Katin and Metcalf were Ohio fast- boys
"Wild" Willy Browning and Nathan Skaggs - both taking
big wins in front of an appreciative
crowd on Saturday night. Browning, aboard his new Sport Cycles
Yamaha YZ-250, tore up the
250 pro class, with Swanton, Ohio's Mike Mercer taking a strong
second place on his Suzuki. Skaggs
whipped up the 125 pro class Saturday with blitzing speed
through the whoops, as he manhandled his YZ-125 and beat out North
Carolina's Paul Justus for the win. Other notable pro's included
Northern Ohio's Vince Karnow, who
took a runner-up spot in Friday night's 125 class and was
unbeatable in the 25 plus money
class, all weekend long, while locals Doug Gall, Steve Andrich,
Shaun Kuchler and John
Wisenbarger all had impressive rides on the weekend. In the
amateur classes, there was an army of fast and old guys tearing up
the jumpy circuit - with some being both
fast and old. Young fast guys included future pro's Zach Ames and
Levi Kilbarger - the two local Ohio riders both put on quite a
show, with their blistering speed often meeting the pro's lap
times and their intense and gifted on-track performances drawing
rave reviews from the viewing public. F& Suzuki sponsored Ames
had a total of seven class wins over the three-day event,
capturing the 250 B class each day and a few wins in the
125 B and Schoolboy classes, as well. Kilbarger, Yamaha mounted,
only had two wins, yet was aggressive and constantly charging, all
weekend. In the elderly-express department, there was a whole lot
of great racing, with Ohio's legendary "King" Richard
Robinson working his new F&S Suzuki ride into a few class
wins, while Mark Roop, Dale Slabaugh, Brad Vanwinkle and Rick
Custard all were brilliant over the triple-day moto-fest, each
making the podium trip a regular meeting place.
